A word about expatriation in Cambodia: a realistic option?

Overall, Cambodia is a relatively safe country. Because of their culture, the locals are welcoming and helpful to foreigners. As infrastructure is less developed than in neighboring countries such as Thailand and Indonesia, the cost of living is also more affordable.

International Living publishes annual lists of the best places to live or retire, and has named Cambodia the cheapest place to retire in 2019 – the fourth year running. This is particularly true for destinations such as Siem Reap, Kep or Kampot.

Living outside the capital?

The capital Phnom Penh offers more amenities and better standards of health and business infrastructure, for example. However, choosing to retire elsewhere can offer a number of advantages, including more affordable costs and a quieter, more enjoyable lifestyle.

The pace of life is slower in the coastal towns of Kep and Kampot, and in the northwest at Siem Reap. These cities are home to a large number of expatriates, as well as the main services they need.

Siem Reap, in particular, is a great place to relocate, both for its amenities and airport access, and for its strong development potential: a new airport is planned in the near future, and feasibility studies are underway for a modern expressway linking the town to the capital Phnom Penh.
